“University of Ilorin expels students for exam fraud: a strong message on academic integrity”

The University of Ilorin, Nigeria, recently took the decision to expel several students for proven cases of exam cheating. This decision was confirmed by the university spokesperson, Kunle Akogun, in an official statement. The affected students, from different academic levels and from various streams such as agriculture, communication sciences, education and life sciences, were subjected to a disciplinary process which led to their expulsion.

This drastic measure was taken following the recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee during its 219th meeting, held from January 10 to 11, 2024. Students at the 100, 300, 400 and 500 levels were affected by this decision, thus demonstrating the severity of the University of Ilorin in the face of academic fraud.

The departments involved in these fraud cases range from agriculture and engineering to communication sciences and life sciences. This mass expulsion sends a clear message about the importance of academic ethics within the institution.
