In this period marked by the constant evolution of the football competition agenda, a recent announcement from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirms major adjustments to the continental sports calendar. Indeed, the next African Cup of Nations (CAN) should take place in July-August 2025 in Morocco, a decision taken in agreement with FIFA so as not to conflict with the first 32-team Club World Cup planned in June 2025.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe spoke about the change at a press conference in Abidjan in February 2024, setting the tone for a new era of continental competitions.
This decision comes after the initial postponement of the CAN scheduled for January-February 2025. Discussions between CAF, FIFA and the Moroccan Football Federation resulted in an agreement for the competition to take place in summer, precisely in July and in August 2025. The advanced dates are from July 20 to August 16 or 17, 2025, providing a clear outlook for participating teams and African football fans.
At the same time, qualifying for CAN 2025 has not yet started, with a preliminary round scheduled for March. This situation demonstrates the importance of effective coordination between authorities to guarantee the smooth running of major African football competitions.
In addition, with the future organization of CAN 2027 in three countries, namely Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the African football landscape promises to be rich in emotions and twists and turns in the years to come.
This new situation questions and arouses the enthusiasm of football fans on the African continent, paving the way for an era of exciting competitions and memorable sporting encounters. Let us remain attentive and impatient to see these changes materialize on the African playing fields.
