Asphalting of streets and avenues in North Kivu in February 2024
North Kivu is taking a step forward towards the modernization of its urban roads with the release of a sum of more than 18 million US dollars by the provincial government. This funding aims to carry out asphalting work on nearly 20 km of streets and avenues in the cities of Beni, Butembo and Goma. The work began at the beginning of February 2024.
This ambitious initiative will be carried out in collaboration with private construction companies recognized for their expertise in this field. Under the supervision of Governor Peter Cirimwami and Deputy Governor Romy Ekuka, the projects must be completed within 12 months.
In detail, Goma will benefit from the paving of 3 km at a cost of 2 million US dollars, Butembo will see 3 km of avenues renovated for 7 million USD, while Beni will benefit from 12 km of improvement for nearly 9 million USD. The first phase will cover 5 km, including Jumlani Avenue, Prison Street towards the town hall, Siviriwa Street and the road giving access to Mavivi airport.
The work is already underway, illustrating the authorities’ desire to bring these crucial infrastructure projects to fruition. The company in charge of operations, SSV, began the various necessary stages such as topographic surveying, reprofiling, foundation layer and remediation, then base layer, under the supervision of Ir Judikael Kakule.
Despite the enthusiasm generated by this initiative, some residents express legitimate doubts, recalling the incompletion of a similar project initiated in 2018. Local authorities are committed to ensuring the proper execution of the work and guaranteeing the quality of the infrastructure renovated.
Note also that this work led to the demolition of uncontrolled constructions erected along the streets and avenues concerned, a necessary measure to ensure the proper conduct of the construction sites. Residents seem to understand the importance of this work for the beautification and modernization of cities, and support this initiative despite the temporary inconveniences.
Ultimately, the paving of streets and avenues in North Kivu at the start of 2024 represents a significant step towards improving urban infrastructure and the quality of life of residents. These projects demonstrate the authorities’ commitment to investing in the future and providing modern infrastructure to the region’s citizens.
