Modernization and asphalting work on avenues in the city of Beni, North Kivu: Between enthusiasm and dismay.
The town of Beni, in North Kivu, is the scene of modernization and asphalting work on certain avenues, carried out under the leadership of the vice-governor, Romy Ekuka. If this initiative is seen as a major step forward by some residents, others express their dismay at the consequences of these transformations on their daily lives.
On the one hand, local residents are delighted at the prospect of seeing their neighborhoods opened up thanks to these renovations. For them, these new infrastructures represent progress and a development opportunity for the city. However, on the other hand, a lot of traders take a dim view of this work, which directly impacts their activities.
Roger Kameta, a meat seller on Jumlani Avenue, is the perfect example. Its kiosk was unbolted to make way for the machines assigned to the work. Disconcerted, he expresses his dissatisfaction with the way things were carried out: “They acted in haste. We should have been given time to prepare. How will I be able to reorganize my business and attract new customers in another area of the city? How will I pay my rent? »
The bulldozers did not stop at the meat kiosks. Many other informal businesses, such as credit sellers, restaurants or shoe repair shops, have been razed along public rights-of-way. This massive demolition left a feeling of dismay among those who saw their livelihood disappear overnight.
The modernization and asphalting work carried out by the Vihumbira Services Company aims to transform several arteries in the city of Beni, including the prison road, Sivirwa Street and access to Mavivi airport. This modernization, while it promises a better living environment for residents, also poses major challenges for those whose activities depend on the streets under construction.
Between enthusiasm for an improved future and dismay in the face of material losses, the inhabitants of Beni find themselves at a crossroads where promises of development are often accompanied by sacrifices.
