“Access to quality care in prison: an essential humanitarian priority”

In order to guarantee access to quality care for prisoners, a MONUSCO medical team went to Kangebayi prison for mass medical consultations. More than 50 detainees were thus able to benefit from treatment for various ailments, such as leg swelling, scabies and malnutrition.

Dr Mukanirwa Potien, consultant physician, highlighted the difficult health conditions faced by these detainees. He highlighted the prevalence of malnutrition, dermatological problems and even tuberculosis among prisoners. Thanks to the medicines provided by MONUSCO, a gradual improvement in their state of health is hoped.

Unfortunately, the situation remains problematic in other penitentiary establishments in the region, such as in Beni, where many diseases continue to be prevalent. Local authorities are sounding the alarm and regularly request support from the central government to improve the conditions of detention and health of prisoners.

This MONUSCO medical consultation initiative demonstrates the crucial importance of ensuring the health of detainees, who often suffer from extremely precarious living conditions. It is essential to continue these actions to guarantee equitable access to care for all, even in prison.
