Launch of Women’s Month in the DRC: a fight against violence and for gender equality

March 8 is fast approaching and with it, the official launch of Women’s Month in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This year, the opening ceremony will take place in Kinshasa, where many political figures and activists will be present to affirm their commitment to the cause of women.

However, this edition of Women’s Month takes on a special character. Indeed, the Minister of Gender, Family and Children recalled during the launching ceremony that this month of celebration will take place against a backdrop of mourning. Indeed, women in eastern DRC face a lot of violence, ranging from rape to looting to murder. All participants are therefore asked to wear black outfits to show their solidarity with these female victims.

A commission has been set up to collect cash donations which will be used to provide assistance to women in the East. It is essential to ease their pain and suffering by providing them with food and clothing. This aid will be intended for women, young girls, unaccompanied children and displaced families in Goma and Bunia.

The international theme chosen this year is “Investing in women, accelerating the pace”, while the national theme is “Increasing the necessary resources for women and girls in peace for a parity Congo”. These themes illustrate the desire to put in place policies and programs in favor of women’s empowerment and gender equality.

The closing ceremony of Women’s Month will be held in Mbuji-Mayi in the Kasai Oriental province on April 15, 2024. This occasion will also be an opportunity to support and encourage women victims of electoral violence.

In conclusion, Women’s Month in the DRC is an important period to raise awareness of the fight against violence against women and to promote gender equality. This year, the mourning of women in the East is at the heart of concerns, and it is essential to provide them with concrete support. Investment in women must be accelerated in order to guarantee an equal future for all Congolese.
