“Road safety: Raising awareness among cyclists to avoid risky behavior on the road”

Bicycles are an integral part of the road traffic system and their users have the same rights as any other road user. However, it is important to remind cyclists that they should avoid any behavior that could lead to conflicts on the road.

Indeed, it has been observed that some cyclists seek to compete with cars and other vehicles, which can be dangerous and even fatal. This is why Felix Theman, commander of the FRSC sector in Gombe, insists on the need to raise awareness among cyclists, especially children, in order to prevent accidents.

Our roads are not designed for competitions and that is why we emphasize that cyclists should not compete with motorcycles and cars. They must drive as far to the right as possible and avoid ending up in the middle of the road.

Additionally, it is essential that cyclists avoid riding at night, as bicycles are not equipped with lights, which can be dangerous, especially for children on main traffic routes. If they still want to use their bikes, it is better that they do so in their neighborhood where traffic is less dense and the risk of accidents is lower.

To educate children on the safe use of bicycles, Felix Theman staff undertook interventions in schools in the Gombe metropolis. He also advises parents to purchase helmets and other protective equipment when buying bicycles for their children, as this will help improve their safety on the road.

It is essential to remind cyclists that they are responsible for their safety and that of other road users. By respecting traffic rules, avoiding risky behavior and wearing appropriate protective equipment, cyclists can fully enjoy their activity while contributing to road safety.
