Hot news: Fighting resumes in the territories of Nyiragongo and Masisi
The security situation in the territories of Nyiragongo and Masisi, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is once again worrying. Civil society in the region reports that clashes resumed this Monday morning on two fronts, endangering the lives of local populations.
The first front is located in the territory of Masisi, more precisely in Murambi, about ten kilometers from the city of Sake. M23 rebels, supported by the Rwandan army, attempted to bypass the positions of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in the Murambi hills. However, Congolese army soldiers managed to repel this attack.
In the Kamuronza sector, heavy artillery detonations are still heard around the town of Sake, where part of the population continues to go about their business despite the precarious security situation. Fighting was also reported in the Kamuronza groupement, near the Kimoka region.
Civil society is calling on army officials to cut off the rebels’ supply route in the Kabuhanga sector, in Nyiragongo territory. This measure is essential to weaken the rebels and preserve the security of the populations.
The second front is located in the Nyiragongo territory, more precisely in the Kihuli sector, in the Kibumba grouping, where violent clashes pit fighters from local militias, called “Wazalendo”, against the rebels. For the moment, no results of the fighting are available.
These recent developments highlight the fragility of the security situation in the North Kivu region and underline the need for rapid intervention to stop the violence and protect civilians.
It is important that the international community remains vigilant on the situation in the North Kivu region and supports efforts to restore peace and security in this part of the country. Measures must be taken to neutralize armed groups and strengthen the presence of Congolese security forces in the region.
Anyone passionate about international news must listen attentively to the current events in the territories of Nyiragongo and Masisi and hope that lasting solutions will be found to end the suffering of the local populations.
