“Violent clashes between the M23 and the armed forces in North Kivu: The population in danger and the worrying security situation”

Clashes between M23 rebels and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) resume in the North Kivu region. This Thursday, February 8, 2024, fighting was reported on the Kibumba axis, more precisely near the Ruhunda market, in the village of Rwibiranga, in the Buhumba group.

This situation of violence forces users of the Goma-Rutshuru road to be extra vigilant. In fact, the RN2, connecting these two cities, is completely blocked and it is strongly recommended not to venture there, unless you are a soldier or a member of the VDP (Volunteers for the Defense of the Country).

In Sake, a strategic city in the region, an uneasy calm reigns after the clashes which took place the day before, February 7. The armed forces managed to push the M23 rebels more than ten kilometers from the city. However, this situation has resulted in the displacement of more than 85% of the population towards Goma, where they hope to find safer refuge.

These armed confrontations reflect the unstable situation that has reigned in the North Kivu region for many years. Hostilities between armed groups and government forces regularly lead to massive population displacements and endanger the security and stability of the region.

It is essential that lasting solutions are put in place to restore peace and security in this region. Support from the international community and local actors is necessary to enable the inhabitants of North Kivu to live in a peaceful environment and rebuild their lives.
