“Job Sikhala released: A symbol of resistance finally finds freedom”

After 19 months of detention, Job Sikhala, an emblematic figure of the Zimbabwean opposition, has finally found freedom. His release took place yesterday, Tuesday January 30, 2024, after he was sentenced to two years in prison.

Job Sikhala, an MP and influential member of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change, has been arrested numerous times over the past 20 years. His political commitment and his opposition to the regime in place have made him a recurring target.

His release from Chikurubi high security prison in Harare, after 595 days of detention, was a moment of relief for his supporters. Job Sikhala denounced the persecution of which he was a victim, affirming that this would in no way diminish his determination to fight for his country.

The conviction of Job Sikhala last week for inciting violence sparked many reactions. He was accused, along with another opposition MP, Godfrey Sithole, of inciting opposition members to avenge the death of an activist. His mutilated body was found after three weeks of disappearance, and the funeral degenerated into violence.

Job Sikhala’s supporters say this is a political trial aimed at muzzling the opposition. According to them, the regime is trying to criminalize political activists to silence them.

Job Sikhala is a truly charismatic figure in the Zimbabwean opposition. His career and his political commitment have made him a voice that matters in the country. His release marks a turning point in his fight and in the fight for democracy in Zimbabwe.
