“The general overview of education and research in the Republic of Congo: finally concrete measures to improve the school system”

The Congolese authorities are mobilizing to improve the education system by opening the work of the general meetings of education and research. These meetings aim to identify the problems affecting the sector and find effective solutions. Teachers’ unions are also hoping for concrete decisions, particularly regarding their recruitment.

Under the presidency of Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso, the general conference on education and research was launched after a year of national consultations. The objective is to create a national framework for Congolese schoolchildren. It is essential to allow all children to access quality training, in line with the objectives of the Congolese education system. The organizers also wish to set up monitoring of the children’s education, from primary school to university, in order to guarantee continuity in their educational career.

Among the problems that undermine Congolese schools, we can cite overcrowding in classrooms, violence in schools and a lack of support for teachers. These ills compromise the quality of teaching and make it difficult for students to thrive.

The teachers’ unions, represented by Daniel Ngmi, coordinator of the United Forces of Congolese education unions, are expecting concrete measures from the States General to resolve the problems they face. They are demanding in particular the full application of the special status which was granted to them in 2018, in order to benefit from administrative and financial recognition.

The work of the States General of Education and Research will continue until Monday. Let us hope that these meetings will make it possible to identify tangible solutions to straighten out the Congolese education system and guarantee a better future for the country’s children.
