“The crisis of girls dropping out of school in Nigeria: The Gem Hub Initiative launches a call to action for quality education”

The Gem Hub Initiative is an organization that seeks to address human capital development needs in Nigeria and Africa, with a focus on youth.

The NGO said the dropout rate of girls was 60% higher than that of boys, indicating a critical crisis.

Mrs. Oyeyemi Pitan, Executive Director of the initiative, made this statement during a press conference to mark World Education Day on Thursday in Abuja.

Pitan pointed out that Nigeria unfortunately ranks first in the world in terms of out-of-school children.

She said beyond the numbers, the situation represents unrealized potential, abandoned dreams and an uncertain future for millions of young Nigerians.

She highlighted that there are specific challenges, such as poverty, growing insecurity, limited access, cultural barriers and poor quality of education.

Highlighting the consequences, she observed that out-of-school children are more likely to remain trapped in the cycle of poverty, contribute to vulnerability and recruitment into armed groups, and hinder national development.

She called for urgent attention to address the deep-rooted gender inequality in education and outlined key steps to be taken by the government.

She highlighted the importance of research, motivating teachers and the need to address insecurity and collaborate with stakeholders to implement recommendations.

She called for swift action, saying: “Let World Education Day mark a turning point, committing to ensuring learning for lasting peace and ending insecurity in our country.”

In conclusion, it is essential to take concrete measures to solve the problem of girls dropping out of school in Nigeria. This requires collaboration between government, NGOs and stakeholders to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, have access to quality education. It is by investing in the education of younger generations that we can build a better future for all.
