The Yunus Emre Institute in Johannesburg: Immersion in Turkish culture

The Yunus Emre Institute, located in Oaklands, Johannesburg, is a Turkish cultural center named after a famous Turkish poet. This institute offers a variety of cultural activities, national day celebrations, art classes, as well as Turkish language classes taught by experts from Turkey.

But who was Yunus Emre? This Anatolian poet from the 13th and 14th centuries is recognized for his representation of human values, love and social peace. Not only did he contribute to the development of the Turkish language through his poems, but he also used his philosophy, based on universal human values, to encourage people to live together in peace and harmony, without religious discrimination, linguistic or racial. The main objective of the Yunus Emre Institute is to maintain this fundamental philosophy in all its activities and areas of interest.

Since 2017, the institute has been offering Turkish language courses in Johannesburg, in a peaceful environment, for those who wish to learn Turkish or improve their language skills. The courses are scheduled twice a year, over two terms, and are taught by a Turkish language teacher. Each term includes 72 hours of classes, or approximately four months. Classes are held weekly from Monday to Friday, and students attend twice a week. Turkish language courses are open to people aged 16 and over.

Children are also welcome at the Kids Club, where they learn Turkish in a fun and age-appropriate way.

Learning Turkish has many benefits, such as the ability to socialize with Turkish friends and communicate with businesses in Turkey. Additionally, there is a fully funded scholarship program to study in Türkiye. When Turkish Summer School is offered, scholars also have the opportunity to participate in this educational and fun six-week program.

For those who do not reside in Johannesburg, online courses are available from February 4, 2024. Simply go to the website http://turkce.yee.org.tr, click on the “online” button “, complete the registration form, verify your information and start your course.
