Comoros: Disputed results of the presidential election fuel political tensions

The recent re-election of President Azali Assoumani in the Comoros presidential election continues to spark tensions and protests from the opposition. Despite the confirmation by the country’s Supreme Court, which ruled the denunciations and appeals inadmissible, the opposition candidates continue to reject the results en bloc and place their hopes in the intervention of the international community. However, the chances of a successful appeal are slim.

The Supreme Court of the Comoros confirms the re-election of Azali Assoumani
The Supreme Court of the Comoros confirmed last Wednesday the re-election of Azali Assoumani in the first round of the presidential election. This court decision was strongly contested by the five opposition candidates, who denounced massive fraud and demanded the cancellation of the vote. They wrote a letter to the chairperson of the African Union Commission requesting his intervention.

The opposition places its hopes in the international community
Faced with the rejection of their requests by the Comorian justice system, opposition candidates are now turning to the international community to put pressure on the Comorian government. They notably wrote to the president of the African Union Commission to request his intervention. However, the chances of success of an international appeal are slim, given the need to maintain diplomatic relations with the Comorian authorities.

The resistance is organized
Despite the low probability of success of an international appeal, the five opposition candidates are not being discouraged. They call on Comorian voters to mobilize and promise organized resistance. After two days of violent riots, a tense calm has been restored throughout the country. The police made numerous arrests, notably of young protesters and opposition leaders.

The need for political dialogue
Faced with this situation of political tension, the Comorian government calls on opponents to stop their accusations and agree to dialogue with the re-elected president. The government seeks to ease tensions and find a political solution that is acceptable to all. However, it is still too early to say whether such a dialogue can be put in place in the coming days.

In conclusion, disputes over the results of the presidential election in Comoros continue to create political tensions in the country. Despite calls for mobilization from the opposition and hopes placed in the intervention of the international community, it is unlikely that an appeal will succeed. The situation therefore remains tense and the need for political dialogue is becoming more and more pressing to find a solution acceptable to all.
