Title: “The security situation is deteriorating in Mweso: clashes between self-defense groups and M23/RDF rebels”
Introduction :
Since the morning of January 24, 2024, violent clashes have broken out in Mweso, about twenty kilometers from Kitshanga, between self-defense groups known as “Wazalendo”, supported by the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic). of Congo), and the rebels of the M23/RDF (Rally of Democratic Forces). This worrying situation plunges the population into fear and uncertainty.
Intense battles:
The first hostilities began at 7 a.m., and since then, the detonations of heavy and light weapons have echoed throughout the city of Mweso. Residents took refuge at the general referral hospital as well as at the local Catholic parish to protect themselves from this violence. It is currently difficult to determine who controls the city of Mweso, between the Wazalendo and the M23.
An escalation of violence:
These clashes come against a backdrop of growing tensions between the two factions. For the past 72 hours, sporadic fighting has broken out not only in Mweso, but also in the Kanyamahoro region, in Nyiragongo territory. The situation is all the more worrying as this violence has already caused the death of a child and significant material damage, particularly following a bomb which hit the city of Mweso.
An imminent intervention by international forces:
Faced with this escalation of tensions, the forces of the Southern African Development Community (SAMI DRC) are preparing to launch an offensive alongside the FARDC against the M23/RDF. The executive secretary of the SADC, Elias Magosi, is currently in Goma to officially install this force and ensure its effectiveness on the ground.
Conclusion :
The security situation in Mweso is alarming, with violent clashes between self-defense groups and M23/RDF rebels. The population is trapped by this indiscriminate violence, finding refuge in places of protection. The imminent intervention of international forces gives hope for a stabilization of the situation and a return to peace for the inhabitants of Mweso. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and closely monitor developments in this region.
