The 3rd South Summit concluded in Kampala on Monday, January 22, bringing together high-level representatives from nearly 100 countries and heads of United Nations agencies. Under the theme “Leave no one behind”, this two-day meeting aims to strengthen South-South cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication and the digital economy. The Ugandan president called for the promotion of the interests of the South.

The 3rd South Summit, which is the highest decision-making body of the Group of 77 (G77), brought together representatives from 134 member countries. Since the 1990s, China has coordinated and cooperated with the G77 through the “G77 and China” mechanism, which is an important platform for developing countries to strengthen their unity and coordinate their actions in the face of global challenges.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the incoming chair of the G77, has stressed the importance of maintaining unity and promoting the collective interests of the Group at the United Nations. He said: “We must ensure that the Group’s priorities are promoted and defended in United Nations intergovernmental processes.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised China’s contribution to South-South cooperation and stressed the importance of reforming international institutions to give greater importance to the South. He said: “This is a very important contribution from China. This summit is the voice of the Global South and one of my main goals is to ensure that we reform international institutions so that the Global South has the importance that corresponds to today’s reality.

This 3rd South Summit, which was held in Africa for the first time, strengthened collaboration between countries of the South in different areas and gave an important voice to developing nations in international discussions. By promoting unity and South-South cooperation, these countries hope to make further progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and defending their interests within the United Nations.
