“Management of rumors and post-election conflicts: how a community in Butembo seeks to prevent tensions with citizen awareness”

Rumor management and post-election conflicts are topics that often cause tension within a community. This is why, in Butembo, in North Kivu, several sections of the population were made aware during a citizen debate organized by the student committee of the official University of Ruwenzori (UOR).

The objective of this awareness raising was twofold: to fight against disinformation after the publication of the provisional results of the legislative elections and to contribute to the development of the Butembo region.

Students, economic operators, political actors and representatives of civil society participated in this debate, with the aim of understanding their role in managing rumors and contributing to the development of their community.

Elie Kasereka Saamoja, student president of the Official University of Ruwenzori, explains: “We saw a lot of tension following the proclamation of the provisional results of the national deputies, creating divisions within the community. As young scientists keen to promote patriotism in the community of Butembo, we decided to organize this activity.”

During the debate, various topics were discussed, including disinformation, verifying information sources before sharing them and preventing post-election conflicts. Participants were encouraged to raise awareness among those around them, in order to spread this knowledge and work together for the development of their community.

One of the participants, Keren Munyambalu, testifies to the benefits she has gained from this awareness: “I have acquired a lot of knowledge. We call on all members of the scientific community to play their role as intellectuals and to contribute to the development of our community of Butembo. Regarding the management of rumors, we encourage the verification of information before disseminating it.

This initiative highlights the importance of awareness and education in combating disinformation and post-election conflicts. By encouraging community members to become actively involved in development and providing them with the necessary tools to face these challenges, it is possible to create a more harmonious environment conducive to the growth of the Butembo region.
