“Political renewal in the DRC: More than 80% of new deputies in the National Assembly”

The National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is experiencing significant renewal, with nearly 80% new deputies following the legislative elections of December 20, 2023. This major transformation reflects the political changes underway in the country.

By making a comparison between the new Assembly and that of the previous legislature, it is notable that the majority of seats previously occupied by the deputies of the Common Front for Congo (FCC) – who did not take part in the electoral process – have were won by executives of the Sacred Union. Only a little over 20% of former MPs managed to keep their seats.

In different provinces, we observe a significant decrease in the number of re-elected deputies. For example, in South Kivu, only 7 deputies out of 25 were re-elected, while in Kwilu, 9 deputies out of 22 retained their seats. In Kinshasa, the capital, only 15 out of 55 deputies were re-elected. Among the re-elected MPs were names such as Wivinne Moleka, Jacques Djoli and Patrick Muyaya, while the likes of Delly Sessanga, Leon Mondole and Juvenal Munubo lost their seats.

In addition, among the 80% of new deputies, we find several members of the government, such as Acacias Mandubola, Antoinette Samba and Nicolas Kazadi, as well as former senators and members of provincial institutions. Some FCC deputies, such as Géneviève Inagosi and Célestin Mbuyu, were re-elected under another political label.

It is also interesting to note that all members of the Union Sacrée presidium, with the exception of Jean-Pierre Bemba, were elected as national deputies. Among them, we find the President of the Senate Bahati Lukwebo, the President of the National Assembly Christophe Mboso, Vital Kamerhe, Augustin Kabuya and Prime Minister Sama Lukonde. Many other members of the government, the Senate and provincial institutions have also joined this renewed National Assembly.

This renewal of the National Assembly marks an important transition in Congolese politics, with a new generation of deputies who hope to bring positive changes and meet the expectations of the population. It will be interesting to follow the evolution of this new Assembly in the months to come.
