2023 African Cup of Nations: Senegal shines, Cameroon and Algeria disappoint in Group C

Group C: Senegal impresses, Cameroon and Guinea hang on

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations began with fanfare for Senegal, defending champions. Aliou Cissé’s team successfully entered the competition by winning 3-0 against Gambia on the first day of group C. The Lions of Teranga showed all their superiority by scoring thanks to Pape Gueye and to the young Lamine Camara, author of a double. A convincing victory which allows them to take the first points in this group.

On the other hand, Cameroon, another favorite in Group C, had a more difficult start. The Indomitable Lions, third in the last edition, were held by Guinea with a score of 1-1. The Guineans opened the scoring thanks to Bayo, but Cameroon managed to equalize thanks to Franck Magri. A meeting which still leaves hope for the Indomitable Lions, despite the absence of their captain and scorer Vincent Aboubacar, injured during training.

In Group D, Algeria was also held to a draw in their first meeting. The Fennecs opened the scoring against Angola thanks to Baghdad Bounedjah, but the Palancas Negras managed to equalize from the penalty spot through Mabululo. A match which confirms that this group is far from easy and that all the points will be precious in the race for qualification.

These first meetings of CAN 2023 promise us an exciting and indecisive competition. Senegal is already showing its strength, but Cameroon and Algeria will have to redouble their efforts to hope to qualify for the rest of the competition. See you at the next meetings to discover the future twists and turns of this African Cup of Nations.
