In a small village in Nigeria, the community of Mafa, located in Borno State, faced attacks from the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists. These attacks have claimed many lives, plunging some into terrible living conditions and forcing them to flee their homes.
But today, Mafa is experiencing significant changes, notably thanks to the presence of Falmata Usman, the first renowned female telephone technician in the region. Witnessing the devastation caused by the attacks, Falmata decided not to give up and fight for women’s rights and gender equality.
“I was going to school before training in phone repair. After graduating, I was at home without a job, until a few years later I discovered my passion for phone repair. And now I can take care of myself and help others around me,” says Falmata.
Many residents of Mafa now call on her services, although some continue to be amazed at the technical expertise of this young woman. Babagana Mogu says he tried in vain to repair his phone before meeting Falmata. “I had problems repairing my phone. I tried four different places, but no luck.” Another client, Maringo Kaffi, testifies to the quality of Falmata’s work. “Their work is very good here, it shows progress. It will really benefit her and those around her. I have seen women doing this type of work before. If she can teach others girls, they will then be able to pass on their knowledge to others, and that means progress for our community.”
Falmata’s courage has earned her the status of a true heroine in this village where, unlike most Nigerian women, women are generally confined to household chores and childcare.
She appeals to women not to remain idle at home, whether they are married or young women. “You are not expected to remain inactive, especially when you have children. You should not depend on your husband to provide for your needs, life is not easy today,” she says -She. “Of course, the father must provide for his children and his wife, but it is good that you play your part, even in doing business, no matter how small. Small beginnings can lead to great successes,” adds Falmata.
Although Nigeria moved up 16 places in the Global Gender Gap Index rankings between 2021 and 2022, there remains a gap of 63.9% according to the Global Gender Gap Report. world. Many residents of Mafa are inspired by the courage of this young woman and believe that they too could escape poverty by following her example in a traditionally male-dominated field in their community.
