Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. However, recent research suggests that there is a simple way to reduce the risk of developing this condition: have regular sex.
Men who ejaculate frequently have a lower chance of developing prostate cancer, according to Dr. Caleb Yakubu, coordinator of the Breast Cancer Screening Clinic at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. He explains that the prostate contains prostatic fluid which mixes with sperm to form seminal fluid.
When ejaculation occurs regularly, there is no stagnation or reduction in fluid flow, which could predispose and increase the risk of cancer. Studies in the United States have even shown that men who ejaculate up to 20 times a month significantly reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer.
It is therefore recommended that men take regular tests to detect prostate cancer early, especially from the age of 40, using a test called prostate specific antigen (PSA). This precautionary measure can help diagnose the disease at an early stage where the chances of recovery are higher.
However, it is also important to note that prostate cancer prevention is not just limited to sexual activity. Lifestyle and diet also play a key role in preventing this disease.
Dr Muyosore Makinde, Consultant Family Medicine and Lifestyle Physician, stresses the importance of making healthy food choices. She deplores the fact that many Nigerians adopt an unbalanced diet to show off their financial well-being, without taking into account the long-term consequences on their health.
To reduce the risk of prostate cancer, it is recommended to reduce the consumption of refined foods, carbohydrates and sugar. It is also essential to increase the consumption of foods rich in fiber, protein and vegetables. It is also important to increase water consumption and reduce high-calorie foods which can lead to obesity and diabetes, thereby promoting insulin resistance.
In conclusion, it appears that regular sexual intercourse and a healthy diet can contribute to the prevention of prostate cancer. However, it is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and to have regular screenings to detect any signs of the disease at an early stage.
