Presidential election in the Comoros 2022: The opposition calls for a boycott, denouncing an electoral charade
Comorians are preparing to go to the polls on January 14 for the election of their governors and president. However, this election is marked by unprecedented political intensity, with part of the opposition calling for a boycott of the electoral process, which it considers a charade.
The Expanded Common Front, which brings together the parties and political leaders of the Comorian opposition, has expressed serious concerns about the conditions for organizing the election. They denounce in particular the partiality of the bodies responsible for the elections, accusing them of favoring the outgoing president, Azali Assoumani.
Maître Mahamoudou Ahamada, spokesperson for the Common Front and former candidate, believes that the elections are fraudulent in advance. It highlights the lack of representation of the opposition in electoral bodies and the fact that candidates cannot be correctly represented in polling stations.
In addition, Maître Mahamoudou Ahamada highlights the abolition of the Constitutional Court by presidential decree, which limits the possible avenues of appeal in the event of contestation of the electoral results. He also accuses the international community of hypocrisy, condemning military coups while ignoring institutional coups.
In this context, part of the opposition called for a boycott of the presidential election. Whatever the outcome of the vote, these opponents will not recognize its legitimacy.
This tense political situation raises many questions about the stability of the country and the credibility of the electoral process. It is essential for the Comorian authorities to take into account the concerns of the opposition in order to preserve the people’s confidence in democracy and avoid any risk of additional tensions.
