“Democracy or violence: The heated debate on power in the Democratic Republic of Congo”

Power by arms or by the ballot box: a debate that is agitating the province of Haut-Uele in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The governor of the province, Christophe Baseane Nangaa, recently expressed his firm opposition to any initiative by his “brother” Corneille Nangaa aimed at taking power by force.

In a public statement, during an extraordinary meeting of the Provincial Security Council, the governor condemned any rebel action aimed at destabilizing legally established institutions. He stressed that the province of Haut-Uele is a haven of peace and peaceful inter-community cohabitation, which will in no case serve as a rear base for insurrectional movements.

The governor also called on the population of the province to remain vigilant and to work closely with the security forces to maintain this peace and prevent any attempt at destabilization. He warned against amalgamations and unfounded accusations made against him because of his family ties with Corneille Nangaa.

Corneille Nangaa, former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), recently announced the creation of a rebel politico-military movement called Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), whose official exit is scheduled for December 15, 2023 in Nairobi. This announcement sparked strong reactions and concerns about the stability of the country.

It is therefore essential that the provincial authorities, supported by the population, remain firm in their commitment to democracy and constitutional order. Power must be acquired legally, through elections, not through violence.

It is also important to emphasize that the actions of Corneille Nangaa and his rebel movement do not represent the entire population of Haut-Uele province. The inhabitants of this region are actors of peace and harmonious coexistence, and they must be supported in their desire to preserve this stability.

In conclusion, it is essential to condemn any attempt to take power by force in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Democracy and respect for constitutional order must prevail, and the Congolese people have the right to choose their leaders through free and transparent elections. The peace and stability of the Haut-Uele region must be preserved, and all forms of violence must be eradicated.
