Torrential rains in Kananga: the population in distress faced with material damage and human losses

Since December 26, 2023, the central Kasai province, in particular the town of Kananga, has been facing torrential rains which have caused extensive material damage and caused the loss of human lives. This worrying situation is a real disaster for the local population who see their city disappearing.

The consequences of the torrential rains are alarming. As of January 10, 2024, erosion threatens the Malandji district, risking engulfing the Cité Béthel church and cutting KASAVUBU 1 avenue in two, located near the headquarters of the road traffic police (PCR) and the Kananga Higher Institute of Technology (ISTK). These erosions are increasing in each district and municipality of the city, plunging the population into daily distress and highlighting the lack of attention from the political-administrative authorities.

These bad weather have already claimed the lives of more than 24 people, whose funerals took place recently. The population notes with concern that the situation continues to deteriorate, while the authorities seem more concerned with their personal interests than with the well-being of the inhabitants.

It is time for concrete measures to be taken to deal with this natural disaster. The population of Kananga deserves to be protected and supported in these difficult times. It is also essential that authorities put in place risk prevention and mitigation programs that can limit the damage caused by such bad weather in the future.

It is also necessary to raise public awareness of the importance of environmental preservation and natural resource management in order to reduce the risk of erosion and ensure the sustainability of the city.

The population of Kananga expects concrete actions from the authorities and hopes that effective measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. It is time for solidarity and commitment to the inhabitants of Kananga to take over to face this critical situation and rebuild a resilient city in the face of climatic hazards.

It is urgent that the Kasai Central province mobilize the necessary resources to meet the needs of the affected population and implement measures to prevent climate risks. Kananga deserves to be supported and protected to guarantee a secure and prosperous future for its inhabitants.
