Title: Improved working conditions for Oyo State legislators: a step towards a stronger legislative institution

Introduction :

Assembly Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, recently announced during the interfaith service for state civil servants that a series of measures had been taken to improve the working conditions of legislators in Oyo State. This decision includes a 35% increase in base salary, an allowance for legislative duties and 30% other allowances under the Negotiated Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure. In addition, 10% of the annual base salary will be reinstated as a leave bonus. This initiative was welcomed by the speaker who also encouraged the governor to encourage other governors to prioritize legislative power in their respective states. This measure aims to strengthen legislative institutions across the country.

Prioritizing the well-being of legislative workers:

By placing greater emphasis on the well-being of legislative workers, the Assembly Speaker hopes to create a stronger, more effective and more sustainable legislative institution. This initiative reflects an awareness of the importance of the legislative power in the proper functioning of the State. By investing in legislators, we encourage the emergence of a more balanced and transparent system of governance.

A request for a future increase:

Assembly Speaker Ogundoyin also expressed his desire to see a future increase in the remuneration of legislators, with particular focus on increasing the negotiated 30% of CONLESS. This request reflects the state’s desire to be a leader in the full implementation of CONLESS in Nigeria. Adequate compensation is essential to attract and retain qualified professionals in the legislative field.

Digitization for live sessions:

In addition to the increase in remuneration, Ogundoyin also stressed the importance of digitization of the assembly and offices to improve live sessions. Digitization will make it easier to carry out legislative work and provide greater accessibility to citizens, by strengthening transparency in the decision-making process.

Conclusion :

The initiative to improve the working conditions of legislators in Oyo State is an important step towards a stronger legislative institution. By placing greater importance on the welfare of legislative workers, considering future salary increases and investing in the digitization of the assembly, Oyo State is showing its commitment to balanced and transparent governance. Hopefully this initiative will serve as an example to other states in Nigeria and encourage improved working conditions for all legislators in the country.
