The town of Bukavu, located on national road number 2 (RN2) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was the scene of a tragic event which provoked the anger of the population. Following the brutal murder of a young man by a police officer, the population decided to take matters into their own hands and blocked the Bukavu-Kavumu road, demanding justice and the arrest of the alleged murderer. This act of protest highlights the serious problems of violence and impunity that persist in the region.

The crime scene :
The drama unfolded on the evening of Thursday January 4. The victim, a bistro owner aged around 20, was the victim of a violent attack. Two soldiers intercepted him and demanded money. Faced with the victim’s refusal to give in to their request, the attackers used physical violence, also attempting to steal her phone. In an act of incredible violence, one of the soldiers fired three bullets into the chest of the young man, who unfortunately died instantly. The two perpetrators of this heinous crime fled, plunging the population into dismay and anger.

The peaceful protest of the population:
The day after the murder, the population of Bukavu could not contain their anger and decided to block the Bukavu-Kavumu road as a sign of protest.
