“MONUSCO invests one million dollars in crucial initiatives for the stability of the Beni-Butembo-Lubero region in the DRC”

In recent news, a mission of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) carried out various actions with a total cost of approximately one million US dollars in the Beni-Butembo-Lubero sector, in the province of North Kivu. This is what the head of MONUSCO office in Beni, Josiah Obat, announced during a press conference.

Among the actions carried out by MONUSCO, there are notably projects aimed at supporting the electoral process and the Congolese national police. Police stations have been built in the region, including one in Beni and another in Oicha, as well as markets in Lubero, Kanyabayonga and Kirumba. In addition, the UN mission provided support to judicial institutions by organizing training for magistrates and contributing to the holding of mobile hearings. A building was also provided for military justice.

Beyond its commitment in these areas, MONUSCO has also invested in the fight against gender-based violence, hate speech and disinformation. Awareness-raising actions have been carried out, including training for journalists to combat disinformation. Furthermore, the promotion of women’s participation in the electoral process was encouraged with exchanges between women from Beni and those from the province of Ituri.

The head of MONUSCO/Beni also stressed that the mission has started a withdrawal plan, having already closed two offices the previous year, those of Butembo and Lubero, and being present today only in three provinces out of the twenty -six in the DRC.

These actions demonstrate MONUSCO’s commitment to the development and stability of the Beni-Butembo-Lubero region. By providing support for security, economic and social aspects, the mission contributes to the consolidation of Congolese institutions and the protection of the rights of local populations. Its initiatives also aim to encourage the participation of women and promote a culture of tolerance and respect for human rights.

In a context where the DRC faces many challenges, the presence and commitment of MONUSCO are essential to support the country in its quest for peace, development and democracy. These concrete actions demonstrate the importance of international support and continued investment in building a better future for all Congolese.
