Félix Tshisekedi re-elected president of the Democratic Republic of Congo: Congratulations from the Angolan President and many other African leaders
Félix Tshisekedi was proclaimed provisional winner of the December 20 presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 73.34% of the votes. This re-election was welcomed by several African heads of state, including Angolan President João Lourenço.
In a letter addressed to Félix Tshisekedi and published by the Angolan news agency Angop, President Lourenço expressed his congratulations and wishes for success for the coming mandate. He believes that this re-election is a guarantee for the restoration of peace and stability both in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in the sub-region.
The Angolan President’s message joins that of 12 other African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Zambia, which have already congratulated Félix Tshisekedi upon the announcement of the provisional results by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
However, the opposition contests the regularity of the vote and the three main candidates, Moïse Katumbi, Martin Fayulu and Denis Mukwege, denounce massive fraud. They refuse to file an appeal before the Constitutional Court, which they consider to be at the service of the power in place. They demand a manual recount of votes under international supervision.
