“A historic meeting between rapid support forces and democratic civilian forces in Sudan: towards a resolution of the humanitarian crisis?”

Recent news in Sudan was marked by a historic meeting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Democratic Civil Forces (Takadum). During these two days of discussions in Addis Ababa, a joint declaration was signed by Abdallah Hamdok, former Prime Minister, and General Mohammed Hamdane Daglo, also known as “Hemedti”, paramilitary commander. This meeting represents an important step forward in resolving the humanitarian crisis and aims to establish a ceasefire to deliver humanitarian aid to millions of Sudanese in need.

The 4-page declaration emphasizes the need to resolve the humanitarian crisis and prioritizes civilian power to establish a democratic, unified and federal Sudanese state. Among the important points of the declaration, the formation of a national committee responsible for investigating abuses committed against civilians, as well as the release of 451 detained by the RSF, is planned.

However, despite this progress, it is important to note that this meeting does not immediately guarantee concrete results. Recent statements by the leaders of the army and the former regime show warlike rhetoric, which could compromise the implementation of the joint declaration. Furthermore, the army’s adherence to this joint program remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, this meeting has symbolic political importance, marking the first step of civilian forces into the political arena after numerous discussions and meetings. This demonstrates a certain progress and the capacity of civilian forces to dialogue with the protagonists of the conflict. It is also important to highlight the mediation efforts of Igad, the regional organization, which is trying to facilitate the peace process in Sudan.

In conclusion, the meeting between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese democratic civilian forces represents a positive sign in the process of resolving the crisis in Sudan. However, there are still many challenges to overcome before lasting peace can be achieved. The willingness of the parties involved to implement the joint declaration and work together will be essential to advance the peace process and provide humanitarian assistance to populations in need.
