Fighting between the M23 and the CMC armed group: the situation is deteriorating in North Kivu
New clashes broke out this Sunday, December 24 in the territory of Rutshuru, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The fighting pits the M23 armed group against the Collective of Movements for Change (CMC), led by self-proclaimed General Domi.
According to several sources, the fighting was concentrated in the villages of Mushebere, Bubasha and Bankuba, located in the chiefdom of Bwito, on the edge of Masisi territory. Intense fire, from light and heavy weapons, was reported, creating great concern among residents in the area.
It appears that it was the M23 rebels who simultaneously launched attacks on these three villages. Witnesses also claim to have heard sporadic shooting in the village of Bambo, occupied by the M23.
The situation is particularly worrying, with a young local killed at point blank range by the rebels on Saturday December 23, according to local sources.
These clashes aggravate an already very unstable situation in the North Kivu region of the DRC. Armed groups continue to sow terror and endanger the lives of thousands of people.
It is essential that the Congolese authorities and the international community take concrete measures to put an end to this violence and allow local populations to live in peace. Resolving this conflict and promoting security are essential elements for the development and stability of the region.
It is more necessary than ever to support efforts to end impunity and violence in North Kivu. The establishment of justice and reconciliation mechanisms as well as sustainable development initiatives is essential to promote a better future for the inhabitants of this region. The urgency of the situation requires reinforced international cooperation in order to put an end to this cycle of violence and guarantee the security of local populations.
