The diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Mali: a quarrel which reflects deep tensions
The already tense relationship between Algeria and Mali has transformed into an open diplomatic crisis, with the recall of the ambassadors of both countries. This escalation follows consultations led by Algeria with Malian rebel groups, as part of the 2015 peace agreement. This approach was not appreciated by the Malian government, which described these actions as interference. in its internal affairs.
The origins of this animosity go back several months. The war raging in northern Mali has heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries, with each trying to play a role in resolving the conflict. Algeria invited signatory groups to the 2015 peace agreement to consultations, which was seen by Mali as a challenge to its authority and interference in its internal affairs.
However, the diplomatic crisis is not limited only to these consultations. Algeria also invited Malian imam Mahmoud Dicko, known for his hostility towards the Malian government. This meeting between Imam Dicko and the Algerian president was perceived as a hostile act by Mali.
Faced with these events, the two countries recalled their respective ambassadors to conduct consultations. This decision marks a new step in the deterioration of bilateral relations, which have already cooled in recent months.
This crisis comes at a time when the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs is going to Morocco for a meeting on the access of Sahelian countries to the Atlantic Ocean. Ironically, Morocco and Algeria are in conflict and have no longer had diplomatic relations since the summer of 2021. This meeting thus offers Abdoulaye Diop, the Malian minister, the opportunity to conduct political consultations with the Moroccan authorities.
The diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Mali highlights the deep tensions that exist between the two countries. Political, economic and security issues in the Sahel region fuel this animosity, and it is unlikely that the situation will be resolved quickly. Mediation and dialogue efforts become essential to find peaceful solutions and prevent an escalation of the crisis.
