Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Voter Education Committee, has announced the release of the timetable and program of activities for the by-elections arising from the resignation or death of members of the National Assembly and state legislatures. This announcement was made in Abuja last Friday.
Olumekun said the committee approved the timetable and program of activities for the by-elections following the vacancies declared by the sitting presidents, namely the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Speakers of the Houses of Assembly. States.
“The vacancies occurred in two senatorial districts, four federal electoral districts and three state electoral districts, covering nine states of the Federation. In addition, the Commission is organizing by-elections following the decisions of the electoral petition appeal tribunals, as part of the 2023 general elections. Currently, 35 constituencies are affected by these court-ordered elections. Three of them cover all constituencies, while the others only concern a few polling stations. Both types of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday, February 3,” he said.
Olumekun also clarified that the election schedule, as well as detailed data on territorial demarcation (i.e. registration areas, names of polling stations, number of registered voters and PVC cards collected), were posted on the INEC website and social media platforms to serve as a guide for political parties and candidates, and to inform the public.
