Christmas is a time of joyful celebration for faithful Christians around the world. Every year, December 25 marks the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. However, this year, residents of Kano, Nigeria are facing difficulties in celebrating Christmas Day as they wish, due to rising prices of poultry.
According to reports gathered by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), many residents are struggling to find chickens at affordable prices. Due to the high demand associated with the holiday season, chicken prices have increased significantly. It is estimated that a kilogram of quality chicken now costs around ₦2,700 instead of ₦2,600, while the price of a live turkey ranges between ₦30,000 and ₦40,000.
This has led some residents to look for alternatives to celebrate Christmas. Agnes Bitrus says she planned to buy a chicken for ₦2,000, but couldn’t find one in that price range. So she opted for beef so she could celebrate the day with her children.
Abel Jacob says the holiday season brings excitement and anticipation for his family, including shopping and giving gifts to friends and those less fortunate. However, rising prices forced Jacob to scale back his initial plans from six chickens to three. He prefers not to go into over-indebtedness for this time of year.
Same observation for Adeleke Moses, who regrets that the high prices of poultry products are inaccessible to the ordinary man. Aware of difficult economic realities, he is planning more modest celebrations this year, keeping in mind the tuition costs that will follow the holiday season.
The situation is similar for Sarah Daniel, who deplores the high cost of food. She believes that many families will not be able to celebrate Christmas in a joyful atmosphere. Economic reality weighs on the end-of-year festivities.
Despite these difficulties, Kano residents are keeping the Christmas spirit and showing resilience in the face of this situation. They are looking for alternatives to celebrate the birth of Jesus, adapting to their economic reality while preserving the importance of this celebration.
In conclusion, rising poultry prices in Kano have affected the way some residents will celebrate Christmas this year. They are forced to find alternative solutions to mark this festive period, without compromising their financial situation. However, despite these challenges, the spirit of Christmas remains and Kano residents are showing resilience in keeping the essence of this celebration at the forefront of their minds.
