Title: Nigerian Navy steps up fight against piracy and oil theft
Introduction :
The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its resolve to combat all forms of maritime crime, particularly oil theft and piracy. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, made this statement at the Nigerian Navy Sunset and Awards Ceremony in Abuja. He noted that vessels and individuals involved in oil theft were apprehended during the various maritime security operations carried out by the Nigerian Navy.
A relentless fight against maritime crime:
The Nigerian Navy is conducting several maritime security operations to combat piracy and oil theft. These operations include Operation AWATSE, Operation Water Guard and Operation Dakata Barau, among others. These operations helped seize vessels and put an end to criminal activities in Nigerian waters.
Strengthening operational capacities:
To strengthen its operational capabilities, the Nigerian Navy recently conducted a comprehensive at-sea inspection involving 13 vessels, two helicopters and a Special Boat Service (SBS) unit. This inspection, called NCHEKWA OSHIMIRI, made it possible to assess the combat capabilities and the readiness of the Navy to face any potential threat. Several exercises were carried out, including operations to combat piracy, against oil theft and against illegal, undeclared and unregulated (IUU) fishing. These exercises helped strengthen the operational readiness of the Nigerian Navy.
Significant progress in 2023:
Vice Admiral Ogalla noted that the year 2023 saw significant progress for the Nigerian Navy. The acquisition of new ships and the modernization of existing platforms have strengthened the Navy’s fleet. Additionally, through technological advancements and improved intelligence gathering, the Navy has gained a better understanding of activities in its waters. At the same time, its engagement in land operations in the northeast, northwest and north-central of the country has contributed to improving the security situation.
International cooperation :
The Nigerian Navy has also strengthened its cooperation with international and regional partners to combat piracy and other forms of maritime crime. Exercises such as Grand Nemo Africa, Obangame Express 2023, Crocodile Lift and Safe Domain have helped strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. These initiatives demonstrate the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment.
Conclusion :
Nigerian Navy continues efforts to combat piracy and oil theft. Through intensive maritime security operations, training exercises and international cooperation, it strengthens its operational capabilities and contributes to the security of the Gulf of Guinea. Combating maritime crime remains a top priority for the Nigerian Navy, which continues to demonstrate commitment and professionalism in this crucial mission.
