“Nigeria commits to finding lasting solutions to global refugee crisis at Global Refugee Forum”

Global issues related to refugees and irregular migration were recently addressed by Nigeria at the Global Refugee Forum. The country reaffirmed its commitment to working with the United Nations and other international actors to find lasting solutions to these problems.

Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has stressed the importance of Nigeria contributing financially, materially and politically to improving the situation of refugees around the world. She also highlighted the Nigerian government’s commitment to include refugees, internally displaced persons and their host communities in national development plans.

Currently, Nigeria hosts approximately 100,000 refugees and more than 8.5 million internally displaced people. The minister stressed that the country is aware of the challenges these people face and is committed to strengthening its protection capacity and facilitating access to durable solutions for refugees and displaced people.

Nigeria also expressed its intention to play an active role in regional and sub-regional efforts aimed at addressing the root causes of forced displacement. The country adopted a road map for the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees to realize these commitments.
