Title: “The crucial importance of good governance for the development of West Africa”

Introduction :

Good governance is an essential pillar to ensure the development and socio-economic transformation of West Africa. At the 64th ordinary session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), held in Abuja on December 10, 2023, President Tinubu stressed the importance of good governance as a catalyst to secure popular support and foster development in the region. In this article, we will explore the main points made by Tinubu and the crucial impact of good governance on solving West Africa’s social and economic problems.

1. Good governance and citizens’ concerns:

Good governance is at the heart of resolving citizens’ concerns. It helps improve their quality of life by creating a stable environment conducive to sustainable development. By addressing issues such as poverty and inequality, good governance helps address the root causes of military interventions in civilian processes. Tinubu stressed that putting in place measures to sanction any member state opting for an unconstitutional change of government is essential to preserve the fundamental rights of citizens in the community.

2. ECOWAS resolutions to strengthen democratic governance:

During the session, West African leaders adopted resolutions aimed at strengthening democratic governance and defending the right of people to elect their leaders. Tinubu stressed the need to respect and support this struggle to protect the fundamental freedoms of citizens in the region. Although the imposition of punitive sanctions may pose challenges, Tinubu stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of democratic institutions and promoting transparent and fair electoral processes.

Conclusion :

Good governance plays a crucial role in the development of West Africa. It helps resolve social and economic problems, improve the quality of life of citizens and create an environment favorable to sustainable growth. Measures taken to punish unconstitutional changes of government and strengthen democratic governance help protect the fundamental rights of citizens in the region. It is essential that West Africa’s leaders continue to promote good governance and work together to ensure a prosperous future for all citizens of the region.
