“COP 28: The DRC mobilizes climate financing to protect peatlands in tropical forests”

The 28th UN Climate Conference of the Parties, also known as COP 28, is currently taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This crucially important event brings together stakeholders from around the world involved in environmental protection.

One of the most notable announcements of this edition of COP 28 is the signing of a climate financing agreement in favor of the protection of peatlands in the tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This initiative is welcomed by the Climate REDD+ Working Group (GTCRR), which calls on the DRC to make strong pleas on climate financing during this conference.

To better understand the challenges of COP 28, we had the opportunity to speak with Guy Nkajemba, coordinator of the GTCRR platform. According to him, this conference represents a unique opportunity for the DRC to highlight the need for climate financing for the preservation of peatlands, real carbon sinks.

Peatlands, in fact, play a crucial role in regulating the global climate by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions. Their preservation is therefore essential to fight against global warming.

Beyond this specific question, COP 28 constitutes a real platform for exchanges and discussions on the environmental challenges we face. Experts, political decision-makers, representatives of civil society and economic actors come together to find concrete solutions and develop sustainable climate policies.

It is important to emphasize that COP 28 is taking place in an international context marked by growing awareness of the climate emergency. Recent studies and scientific reports highlight the devastating consequences of global warming and the need to act quickly to limit its impact.

In this context, the presence of the DRC at COP 28 and its commitment to the protection of peatlands demonstrate its desire to actively contribute to the fight against climate change. This country, which is home to exceptional biodiversity and precious natural resources, plays a key role in global efforts to preserve the environment.

In conclusion, COP 28 in Dubai constitutes a crucial meeting for the planet. The discussions and decisions taken there will have a significant impact on our common future. Let us hope that the commitments made at this conference will accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient world in the face of the environmental challenges facing us.
