“Moving tribute at the funeral of Sierra Leone’s heroes, who fell during an attempted coup”

The funerals of members of Sierra Leone’s security forces, who lost their lives during an attempted coup on November 26, were marked with emotion. Chaired by President Julius Maada Bio, the ceremony brought together bereaved families, religious representatives, the army and the police.

The funeral procession headed to a military cemetery in Freetown, where 18 soldiers, a police officer and a prison guard were buried. Hundreds of people paid their respects along the way, showing respect and gratitude to these men and women who sacrificed their lives to defend democracy.

President Bio delivered a solemn speech, expressing shared pain at this tragic loss. He also underlined the responsibility of all to ensure that justice is done for these sacrifices.

The attempted coup took place in the early morning of November 26, when men attacked several military sites, prisons and police stations. The clashes left a total of 21 people dead, including 18 members of the security forces and 3 attackers. Sixty people were arrested in connection with these events, mainly soldiers.

Sierra Leone is unfortunately not alone in facing coup attempts in the West African region. Since 2020, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Guinea have all been affected by such events, threatening regional stability.

This wave of coups has sparked growing concern and highlights the need to strengthen security and democratic governance mechanisms in the region.

The funeral of members of Sierra Leone’s security forces was a poignant moment of national mourning and solidarity. Let us hope that these sacrifices are not in vain and that effective measures are taken to prevent such acts of violence in the future.
