Intrusion of armed groups in electoral campaigns in Lubero: a threat to democracy – Revelation of the NGO CIDED

News: Armed groups hinder electoral campaigns in Lubero territory

The NGO Conference of Speakers for Democracy, Environment and Human Rights (CIDED) denounced the interference of armed groups in the electoral campaigns of legislative and provincial candidates in the Lubero territory. According to the NGO, candidates who do not explicitly support self-defense groups called Wazalendo are barred from accessing areas occupied by local armed groups.

This situation has led to frustrations and conflicts, which could potentially have disastrous consequences. Joseph Malikidogo, executive secretary of the NGO CIDED, recommends sanctioning candidates who exploit these groups and who thus contribute to breaking down the gradually established social cohesion.

According to Lubero civil society and security sources, around 80% of the territory is under the occupation of local armed groups. This situation seriously compromises the democratic process and prevents candidates who do not comply with the demands of armed groups from conducting their campaigns fairly.

There is an urgent need to take measures to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process in the Lubero territory. The presence and activism of armed groups must not hinder the participation of candidates and the rights of voters. It is essential that the relevant authorities take measures to end this interference and ensure the safety of all political actors.

It is also important that the international community and human rights organizations support efforts to ensure free and fair elections in the region. Stability and democracy are essential pillars for development and the well-being of the population.

It is time to act to put an end to the harmful influence of armed groups in the electoral process in the Lubero territory. The voices of candidates and voters must be respected and protected, in order to build a better future for all.

With this in mind, the NGO CIDED will continue to advocate for democracy, the environment and human rights, in order to put an end to the interference of armed groups and to promote a transparent and fair electoral process. .
