“Fighting against social vices among young people: the crucial importance of the role of parents reaffirmed at a conference”

In our current society, problems of social vices, especially drug abuse among young people, are a growing concern. Through a conference at the 11th annual Al-Habibiyyah women’s forum in Abuja, Aisha Babangida, the daughter of the famous Nigerian military president Ibrahim Babangida, highlighted the importance of the role of parents in the fight against these scourges.

Aisha highlighted the fact that prevention of social vices must start from the home. She stressed the importance of being attentive and vigilant towards our children, of talking to them and guiding them in order to protect them against these vices.

She cited the alarming example of mothers who do not hesitate to give their children cough syrups to calm them down. She highlighted the importance of education as a means of prevention, encouraging parents to engage in more discussions and awareness on this subject.

Aisha also emphasized the role of educational institutions in combating social vices. She recommended the establishment of counseling and information sessions for students, both at higher education establishments and secondary schools.

The conference also saw the intervention of Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, Deputy Director of Outreach of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who highlighted the importance of proper parenting to combat vices in the society. She emphasized that the parenting style adopted will impact the quality of the children we raise.

Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society, noted that the forum was a means for the association to address contemporary challenges in society. He called on parents, society and relevant government bodies to work together to combat rising social vices in the country.

The conference highlighted the importance of awareness and education in the prevention of social vices, especially drug abuse among young people. Parents should play an active role in their children’s lives and guide them on the right path. It is together, by joining forces, that we can effectively fight against these social vices and preserve the future of our society.
