“Priority to the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents: the PNSA in action for their well-being in the DRC”

Title: Adolescent sexual and reproductive health: a priority for the PNSA

Introduction :
The sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people is an essential topic that requires increasing attention. This is why the National Adolescent Health Program (PNSA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo has published a new information bulletin entitled “Ados & Jeunes” for the second quarter of 2023. This bulletin highlights the importance of nutrition and sexual and reproductive health for adolescents and young people, as well as the various initiatives put in place by the PNSA to promote their well-being.

The link between nutrition and sexual and reproductive health:
The PNSA recognizes the close links between nutrition and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). By emphasizing a quality diet, varied and in appropriate quantities, PRONANUT, in collaboration with the PNSA, aims to ensure healthy growth, good health and the pleasure of eating for adolescents. This holistic approach recognizes that nutrition plays a critical role in the overall development of adolescents, including their sexual and reproductive health.

Captivating topics from the newsletter:
The “Ados & Jeunes” newsletter addresses several captivating topics in this area. Among them, we find information on the “Task Force”, a campaign entitled “Bisengo ezanga Likama” (well-being and health of adolescents), the support of the Provincial Health Directorates (DPS), as well as the importance partnerships with the School of Public Health/SANRU. The bulletin also refers to the analysis of DPS data, supported by the World Bank, and the “YouthFim” project.

The achievements of the PNSA:
The bulletin highlights the various achievements of the PNSA in the field of adolescent and youth health. In collaboration with PRONANUT, the PNSA ensures the coordination of interventions and stakeholders working in this area. The quarterly meetings of the Task Force allow stakeholders to share their experiences and contribute to the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Health and Well-being of adolescents and young people 2021-2025.

The challenges to be met:
Despite the progress made, it is important to emphasize that access to health services adapted to the needs of adolescents and young people remains limited. Additional efforts must be made to ensure the availability of quality services in care and health facilities, as well as in the community. Technical and financial partners are encouraged to support the government’s efforts in this area, in order to improve the provision of services adapted to adolescents and young people in the DRC..

Conclusion :
The publication of the “Ados & Jeunes” bulletin by the PNSA highlights the importance given to the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people in the DRC. With a focus on nutrition and sexual and reproductive health, the PNSA helps promote the overall well-being of adolescents and youth. However, challenges remain and require continued attention from relevant stakeholders. It is essential to support the government’s efforts to ensure access to quality services adapted to the needs of adolescents and young people in the country.
