“Electoral campaign in the DRC: Lies, manipulations and unrealistic promises, it is time to restore transparency”

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has entered a new phase in its history with the 2023 general elections. However, the first week of the electoral campaign was marked by questionable communication tactics and extravagant promises from the candidates. Within communications teams, lies and manipulation took precedence over transparency and honesty towards voters. It is time to take stock of this absurd situation and think about the future of the country.

On the side of those in power, the main difficulty lies in the presentation of a tangible assessment. Concrete achievements are rare and strategists have therefore chosen to create fictitious stories to embellish the outgoing president’s record. Misleading images circulate on the Internet, presented as proof of success, when in reality they are manipulated. This strategy aims to distract voters from the real issues and generate support through deception.

As for the opposition, it finds itself faced with several major challenges. First of all, it must convince voters that it represents a credible alternative to the power in place. To do this, it must present a concrete social project, focused on peace, political reforms and the development of the country. Unfortunately, some opposition factions have been marred by corruption scandals and made shifts in alliances that have undermined their credibility. These behaviors have sown doubts about their ability to bring about real change.

Faced with this situation, it is essential to establish a quality electoral debate in the DRC. Voters deserve to be informed honestly and transparently about the real issues facing the country. Unfortunately, the Superior Audiovisual and Communication Council (CSAC) shows its limits in organizing a quality public debate at the presidential level. It is therefore essential to find solutions to improve this situation and promote a more mature, democratic and responsible political dialogue.

In conclusion, the first week of the electoral campaign in the DRC was marked by absurdity, lies and unrealistic promises. Both in power and in opposition, communications strategists have favored deception rather than transparency. It is time to reorient the political debate towards real issues and to be honest with voters. The DRC deserves a quality electoral debate, focused on concrete solutions and realistic proposals for the future of the country.
