Investment of 4 billion euros: the DRC, a new pioneer of green energy in Africa thanks to Germany

Green energy in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a German investment of 4 billion euros by 2023

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is an African country with incredible natural resources, particularly in terms of renewable energy. The German government recently announced its intention to invest up to 4 billion euros by 2023 in the green energy sector in Africa, with a particular focus on the DRC.

This initiative follows a meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and African leaders during the G20 Compact with Africa summit. Germany wants to develop strong cooperation between Africa and Europe to ensure a climate-friendly energy supply based on green hydrogen.

The DRC’s energy potential is impressive, with resources such as biomass, wind, solar, biogas and biofuel. The Inga project, in particular, has a potential power of 39,000 MW, while the Congo River offers an estimated potential of 100,000 MW spread over 780 sites in the country.

The German government is thus encouraging the DRC to produce green hydrogen, offering to become involved as a buyer. This initiative aims to enable African countries to make greater use of their natural resources, by creating local jobs and promoting prosperity.

Germany, for its part, has set a target of 30% renewable energy by 2030. However, the European Union recently revised this target upwards, setting a minimum of 42.5%. of renewable energies in final energy consumption by 2030. This new target will lead to an increase in the German target.

This German initiative opens new perspectives for the DRC in terms of development of the green energy sector. The planned investments will make it possible to develop the necessary infrastructure, accelerate the country’s energy transition and stimulate the local economy.

In conclusion, the announcement of German investment of 4 billion euros in green energy in the DRC demonstrates recognition of the immense energy potential of this country. This initiative offers considerable opportunities for economic and social development, while contributing to the fight against climate change. The DRC, with its abundant natural resources, is set to become a key player in the energy transition in Africa.
