The electoral campaign slows down government activities in the DRC: press review of Thursday November 23, 2023

Kinshasa press review from Thursday November 23, 2023

The Kinshasa newspapers devoted their columns this Thursday to the meeting of the Prime Minister, Sama Lukonde, with his collaborators in order to ensure the minimum service during the current electoral campaign period.

The newspaper Le Potentiel reports that upon his return from the G20 Compact with Africa summit in Berlin, Prime Minister Sama Lukonde chaired a restricted meeting of the Council of Ministers. During this meeting, he stressed the importance of ensuring the continuity of public services despite the current electoral campaign. The newspaper also highlights that government missions will be sent to certain regions of the country to assess the security situation.

Along the same lines, the Forum des As newspaper notes that during this meeting, the Prime Minister also discussed his participation in the G20 Compact with Africa summit. The signing of a joint note between the Congolese government and MONUSCO was also mentioned, marking the start of the process of gradual disengagement of the UN mission in the DRC. The Minister of Finance also presented a financing offer for the supply of basic necessities in vulnerable areas.

Prosperity places emphasis on the examination and adoption of texts during this meeting of the Council of Ministers. Two bills were presented, one relating to the empowerment of the government and the other authorizing the extension of the state of siege in certain parts of the country. The newspaper also points out that some members of the government, who are also candidates for the elections, are currently on the electoral campaign.

Finally, the EcoNews newspaper notes that the DRC is entering a period of electoral campaign, leading to a slowdown in government activities. This period of slowdown poses challenges in terms of continuity, stability and effective management of public affairs. President Félix Tshisekedi, who is a candidate for his own succession, is focusing on his electoral campaign, which is reducing official activities and presidential commitments.

In conclusion, the current electoral campaign period in the DRC is leading to a slowdown in government activities, with a minimum service provided to maintain the continuity of public services. The government is sending missions to regions affected by security problems and measures are being taken to facilitate the supply of basic necessities in fragile areas. However, this slowdown poses challenges in terms of managing public affairs and maintaining stability. The electoral campaign continues until December 18, 2023, when it closes.
