DRC First Lady and African Union Special Envoy unite to promote women’s health and rights in Africa

Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bineta Diop, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, recently met to discuss the First Lady’s achievements in favor of the DRC. Emphasis was placed on actions in the field of health, in particular the care of sickle cell patients and the fight against this serious illness which particularly affects women.

Bineta Diop praised Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi’s commitment to the fight against violence against women, particularly through the Fonarev initiative. She also praised the work and initiatives of the First Lady within the OPDAD (Organization of First Ladies of Africa). She encouraged Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi to reproduce this model in other African countries, thus highlighting the potential of her action in favor of women.

The African Union delegation, of which Bineta Diop was a member, planned to go to Goma, in the east of the DRC, as part of its mission in favor of women. This visit aims to support and strengthen efforts to empower women and combat gender-based violence.

Bineta Diop also advocated for the involvement of women in peace processes and decision-making. She encouraged Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi to take initiatives, by working with political parties and the President of the Republic, to promote better representation of women in these areas.

Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi’s action in favor of women and health in the DRC was welcomed by Bineta Diop, who underlines the importance of such commitments to promote gender equality and the well-being of women.
