The tie: losing popularity or ready to make a comeback in men’s wardrobes?

The tie: an accessory losing popularity or a must-have in men’s wardrobe? In recent years, this element traditionally associated with men’s formal attire seems to have gradually disappeared. Between more casual trends, such as “casual Fridays” or the generalization of teleworking, the tie is deserting offices and losing popularity.

Yet some fashion experts say we should never underestimate the resurrection potential of old-fashioned clothing. Instagram fashion influencer Derek Guy shares the perspective of a high-end clothing store owner who now views tie displays as mere decorations.

The tie experiences fluctuations in popularity depending on trends. Fashion expert Alexandra Van Houtte reveals that during the spring 2024 men’s shows, 4% of looks included a tie, a significant increase compared to the previous year (1%). French brands Hermès and Charvet even observed a double-digit increase in tie sales in 2023.

However, despite these encouraging observations, it seems that the tie is destined to become an accessory reserved for special occasions, comparable to the wedding dress for women. Guy Trebay, fashion journalist, predicts that in ten or twenty years, the tie will be worn only at formal events.

It is therefore obvious that people will continue to need ties, but their use will be less frequent. Dress codes are evolving and the tie will follow this dynamic. It will thus be able to reinvent itself and regain popularity, as has been the case with other men’s clothing in the past.

In conclusion, the tie is losing its predominance in men’s wardrobe, but it will not disappear completely. It will remain a symbolic accessory for formal outfits and special occasions. It may even make a comeback in the future, attracting a new generation of men in search of elegance and sophistication.
