News: Religious representatives encouraged to work with young people to fight anti-Semitism
Following massive demonstrations against anti-Semitism in France and the controversy surrounding the absence of President Emmanuel Macron at the march, representatives of the religions were invited to a meeting at the Élysée. The objective: to discuss the actions to be put in place to combat this scourge and promote the values of the Republic.
During this meeting, the President called on religious representatives to make an “educational effort” among young people. According to him, it is essential to explain the universalist spirit and the values of the Republic to this generation, in order to prevent victimized competition and build a united society.
Religious leaders, whether the rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, the chief rabbi of France, the president of the Conference of Bishops of France or the president of the Protestant Federation of France, all responded favorably to this call. They are committed to relaying this word in their respective communities.
The objective is to reach young people who are turning away from the press and television, and who are evolving in spheres where they are not exposed to other ideas. It is important to show them the importance of living together and to promote respect for others, in order to fight against prejudice and discrimination.
For religious representatives, it is essential not to close oneself in one’s own suffering, but to take into account all forms of discrimination and racism. They also underlined the importance of the fight against anti-Semitism, while recalling the outburst of hostile statements against Muslims in recent times.
The President also invited Muslim representatives to this meeting, but some were unable to attend. The rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris explained that it would have been preferable to make this fight a fight against racism in general, including all discriminated minorities.
It is undeniable that anti-Semitism is on the rise in France, and it is essential that all communities mobilize to combat it. It is by showing listening, dialogue and education among young people that we can build a united, respectful and tolerant society, where each individual is free to practice their religion without fear of discrimination.
This meeting at the Élysée highlighted the need to unite all religious voices to fight anti-Semitism and promote the values of the Republic. This fight must be waged jointly, showing solidarity and promoting mutual understanding. Only in this way can we hope to build a better future for all.
