In Senegal, the political scene is coming to life in the run-up to the presidential election in February 2024. A new opposition coalition, called the Front for Inclusivity and Transparency of Elections (Fite), was recently formed. Made up of 35 members, this alliance aims to promote free and transparent elections and denounces a democratic decline under the presidency of Macky Sall. Among the members of Fite, we find figures from Ousmane Sonko’s former Pastef party as well as leading political figures such as Aminata Touré, former Prime Minister.
Fite’s mission is to bring together political forces resolutely determined to restore Senegalese democracy, undermined according to them, by the Macky Sall regime. They thus wish to guarantee the participation of all candidates, denouncing any illegal exclusion, in order to preserve the transparency, sincerity and regularity of the presidential election. Concrete actions are already planned, in particular visits to the families of victims of illegal immigration.
But Fite doesn’t plan to stop there. They also set up a center of experts responsible for closely monitoring the electoral process. In addition, they plan to bring together all the opposition political forces in the different departments and also within the diaspora in order to strengthen their capacity for influence.
Among the members of Fite, Aminata Touré, former Prime Minister, denounces the “provocations” of President Macky Sall, particularly at the level of the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (Cena), where several leaders of the ruling party are said to be present. Faced with this, Fite plans to contest the decree that installs the new Cena.
The list of Fite members currently remains open to other candidates who would like to join the movement, without distinction of political party. This desire for inclusiveness shows the determination of this coalition to put forward the general interest and to work for a strengthened Senegalese democracy.
In conclusion, the Front for Inclusivity and Transparency of Elections (Fite) represents a new strong voice of the Senegalese opposition in view of the 2024 presidential election. With members from different political groups, this coalition advocates transparency and participation of all candidates. The actions and initiatives planned by Fite underline their determination to restore democracy in Senegal.
