Political clashes in Kasumbalesa, in Haut-Katanga, continue to make waves. Activists from the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) and the Ensemble Pour la République party clashed violently, arousing the indignation of the organization Justicia Asbl, which denounces the inaction of the justice system in the face of these acts of violence and incitement to tribal hatred.
In a press release, Justicia Asbl points out the silence of the judicial authorities and warns of the potentially serious consequences of this inertia. A viral video is circulating on the internet, in which an unidentified individual takes responsibility for attacks against members of Ensemble Pour la République and makes threats against Moïse Katumbi, the party’s presidential candidate.
The civil society organization calls on political leaders to raise awareness among their activists and put an end to these attacks based on tribal hatred and political intolerance. As the DRC prepares for general elections, it is crucial to promote a peaceful and respectful climate in order to guarantee free and democratic elections.
These clashes occur in a context where political tensions are at their height. Supporters of Ensemble Pour la République accuse those of the UDPS of having attacked their activists during a demonstration in Kasumbalesa. In retaliation, Ensemble members attacked the UDPS office. This escalation of violence is particularly worrying a few weeks before the elections.
It is essential that judicial authorities act quickly and impartially to put an end to this political violence. Civil society, for its part, plays a crucial role in denouncing these acts and pressing for justice. The stability of the country and the credibility of the elections depend on it.
It is regrettable to note that the situation in Kasumbalesa is far from being an isolated case. Political violence and regional tensions are commonplace in the DRC, endangering the country’s stability and hindering its development.
It is therefore more necessary than ever to raise public awareness, promote dialogue and strengthen the rule of law. Only concrete measures and real political will will make it possible to put an end to this spiral of violence and build a peaceful and prosperous future for the DRC.
