Increase in prices of petroleum products: Impact on motorcycle drivers and traders in Beni and Butembo
In recent days, an increase in the prices of petroleum products has been felt in Beni and Butembo, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This situation has caused concern and frustration not only among motorcycle drivers, but also among traders whose prices of goods are directly impacted.
Gasoline, which was usually traded between 3,400 and 3,500 Congolese Francs per liter, reached 4,000 or even 5,000 Congolese Francs. The consequences of this surge in prices are being felt at different levels, affecting both customers and travel agencies.
Travel agencies are particularly affected, with customers accustomed to different prices. For example, a trip by car from Butembo to Goma previously cost $50, but with the increase in the price of gasoline, this price has now increased to between $60 and $65. Discussions and disagreements thus arose between customers and public transport agents.
Even shopping in town has seen its prices increase, from 1,000 Congolese Francs to between 1,500 and 2,000 Congolese Francs. This situation has raised questions about the beneficiaries of this increase in the prices of petroleum products and the causes of this surge on the market.
Faced with these problems, some economic actors suggest that any economic operator involved in this matter without valid reason be sanctioned by the national economy service.
It is therefore crucial to closely monitor developments and find solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of this price increase on motorcycle drivers, traders and consumers in Beni and Butembo.
